The History of Bally’s Las Vegas
In 1963 the site originally was home to the Three Coins Motel. In 1967 the Bonanza Hotel and Casino took over the site and soon after it was renamed New Bonanza Hotel and Casino. Shortly after, Kirk Kerkorian took over the site and began construction on the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.
The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino opened with 2 084 hotel rooms in 1973. At the time it became the largest hotel in the world and was larger than the Empire State Building. The resort was said to have made the largest impact on the Las Vegas strip and was the most popular destination until the opening of the Mirage Hotel.
In 1980 a fire broke out in one of the restaurants which travelled up to the hotel. A total of 85 guests and employees were killed. The fire led to fire safety being implemented in hotels worldwide and is seen as one of the worst fires in a high rise building in the history of America.
In 1985 the hotel was purchased by Bally Entertainment Corporation who changed the name of the resort to Bally’s Las Vegas. Bally Entertainment Corporation was later purchased by Hilton Hotels who eventually split from the casino resorts division which became known as Caesars Entertainment who officially acquired the resort in 1995.
